When Turkey shot down a Russian military jet last November, business ties between the two countries hit rocky terrain, with Russia slapping trade sanctions on Turkey. Sanctions on Turkey's tourism, construction and food export industries are now set to be gradually phased out, Russian package tours will no longer face suspension and two major join energy projects will be unfrozen as part of the renewed relationship. Where Turkey is concerned, a 41% drop in international arrivals - prior to the attempted coup - has proven detrimental to the tourism industry. Assurances were made to foreign investors post-attempted coup, legislation to create a sovereign wealth fund has been proposed and younger Turks are now being forced to pay into a private pension to improve on their savings, all in a bid to rescue Turkey's troubled economy. Many, like CEO of Limak Holdings Ebru Ozdemir, are positive about the future. "Last year Turkey broke its own record in foreign direct investments," says Ozdemir. "We hit $16 billion and this year we want to break this again - we want to go even higher." But the general consensus is very much in favour of Turkish and Russian relations being back on track, especially where mutual benefits are concerned. "Turkey needs Russian gas and Russia needs Turkish produce, beaches and warmer weather," says Bulent Gultekin, professor of finance at Pennsylvania University. "There's a perfect complimentarity between the two countries." More from Counting the Cost on: YouTube - http://aje.io/countingthecostYT Website - http://aljazeera.com/countingthecost/

Chinese YUAN overtakes EURO, becomes 2nd most popular TRADE FINANCE CURRENCY Subscribe here for more Prime Interest, Max Keiser & Financial news: The yuan has replaced the euro to become the second most widely used currency in global trade in 2013, according to the SWIFT network responsible for international financial transactions. The share of the yuan in global trade finance has jumped from 1.89 percent in January 2012 to 8.66 percent in the form of letters of credit and collections in October 2013, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) data shows. The share of trade settlements in the euro fell from 7.87 percent to 6.64 percent in the same period. The US dollar still leads with 81.08 percent of foreign trade payments using the American currency in October. The most active yuan users are Chinese and Hong Kong companies which account for about 80 percent of the total foreign trade operations in the yuan. The remaining 20 percent is spread among Singapore (12%), Germany (2%), Australia (2%) and other countries (4%). "The renminbi is clearly a top currency for trade finance globally and even more so in Asia," Franck de Praetere, SWIFT's Singapore-based head of payments and trade markets for Asia Pacific, commented in a statement. "I think it is more to do with using China as a carry trade -- people want to get their money into China," says Nick Verdi, Asia FX strategist at Barclays. "With global interest rates so low, China really is the only place where you can get such a large carry. Trade finance is one of the key avenues to take advantage of that." According to SWIFT, in October the yuan remained the world's 12th most popular means of payment, its share decreased to 0.84 per cent from 0.86 per cent in September. Even though value of payments grew by 1.5% for the month, payments in all currencies rose by 4.6% Hong Kong, the largest yuan hub outside China, has accumulated a record 782 billion yuan ($128 billion) in October. Following China's violent suppression of demonstrators in June 1989, the US and other governments enacted a number of measures against of China's violation of human rights. The US suspended high-level official exchanges with the PRC and weapons exports from the US to the PRC. The US also imposed a number of economic sanctions. In the summer of 1990, at the G7 Houston summit, Western nations called for renewed political and economic reforms in mainland China, particularly in the field of human rights. Tian'anmen disrupted the US-China trade relationship, and US investors' interest in mainland China dropped dramatically. The US government responded to the political repression by suspending certain trade and investment programs on June 5 and 20, 1989. Some sanctions were legislated while others were executive actions. Examples include: The US Trade and Development Agency (TDA): new activities in mainland China were suspended from June 1989 until January 2001, when President Bill Clinton lifted this suspension. Overseas Private Insurance Corporation (OPIC): new activities have been suspended since June 1989. Development Bank Lending/International Monetary Fund (IMF) Credits: the United States does not support development bank lending and will not support IMF credits to the PRC except for projects that address basic human needs. Munitions List Exports: subject to certain exceptions, no licenses may be issued for the export of any defense article on the US Munitions List. This restriction may be waived upon a presidential national interest determination. Arms Imports - import of defense articles from the PRC was banned after the imposition of the ban on arms exports to the PRC. The import ban was subsequently waived by the Administration and reimposed on May 26, 1994. It covers all items on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms' Munitions Import List. During this critical period, J. Stapleton Roy, a career US Foreign Service Officer, served as ambassador to Beijing.[60] In 1996, the PRC conducted military exercises in the Taiwan Strait in an apparent effort to intimidate the Republic of China electorate before the pending presidential elections, triggering the Third Taiwan Straits Crisis. The United States dispatched two aircraft carrier battle groups to the region. Subsequently, tensions in the Taiwan Strait diminished and relations between the US and the PRC improved, with increased high-level exchanges and progress on numerous bilateral issues, including human rights, nonproliferation, and trade. President Jiang Zemin visited the United States in the fall of 1997, the first state visit to the US by a PRC president since 1985. In connection with that visit, the two sides came to a consensus on implementation of their 1985 agreement on Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation, as well as a number of other issues.[61] President Clinton visited the PRC in June 1998. He traveled extensively in mainland China, and had direct interaction with the Chinese people, including live speeches and a radio show which allowed the President to convey a sense of American ideals and values. President Clinton was criticized by some, however, for failing to pay adequate attention to human rights abuses in mainland China.[62] China-U.S. relations were damaged for a time by the NATO Bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade in May 1999, which was stated by the White House to be miscoordination between intelligence and the military, although which some Chinese believed to be deliberate. By the end of 1999, relations began to gradually improve. In October 1999, the two countries reached an agreement on compensation for families of those who were victims, as well as payments for damages to respective diplomatic properties in Belgrade and China. In April 2001, a PRC J-8 fighter jet collided with a US EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft flying south of the PRC in what became known as the Hainan Island incident. The EP-3 was able to make an emergency landing on PRC's Hainan Island despite extensive damage; the PRC aircraft crashed with the loss of its pilot, Wang Wei. It was widely believed that the EP-3 recon aircraft was conducting a spying mission on the Chinese Armed Forces before the collision. Following extensive negotiations resulting in the "letter of the two sorries," the crew of the EP-3 was released from imprisonment and allowed to leave the PRC 11 days later. The US aircraft was not permitted to depart Chinese soil for another three months, after which the relationship between the US and the PRC gradually improved once more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China%E2%80%93United_States_relations

How Banks Work Documentary The very first banks were probably the religious temples of the ancient world. In them were stored gold in the form of easy to carry compressed plates. Their owners justly felt that temples were the safest places to store their gold as they were constantly attended, well built and were sacred, thus deterring would-be thieves. There are extant records of loans from the 18th Century BC in Babylon that were made by temple priests to merchants. Ancient Greece holds further evidence of banking. Greek temples as well as private and civic entities conducted financial transactions such as loans, deposits, currency exchange, and validation of coinage. Interestingly, there is evidence too of credit, whereby in return for a payment from a client, a Money Lender in one Greek port would write a credit note for the client who could "cash" the note in another city, saving the client the danger of carting coinage with him on his journey. Ancient Rome perfected the administrative aspect of banking and saw greater regulation of financial institutions and financial practices. Charging interest on loans and paying interest on deposits became more highly developed and competitive. The ascent of Christianity in Rome and its influence restricted banking, as the charging of interest and usury were seen as immoral. Jewish entrepreneurs, free of Christian taboos about money, established themselves in the provision of financial services increasingly demanded by the expansion of European trade and commerce. The modern Western economic and financial heritage begins as early as the establishment of Jonathan's Coffee-House, which later became the London Stock Exchange. This became a base for stock traders expelled from the Royal Exchange. In 1698 John Casting, began publishing a twice weekly newsletter of share and commodity prices, which he sold at Jonathan's. One of the oldest London Banking institutions still operating today is Barclay Bank, which was founded by John Frame and Thomas Gould in 1690. The bank was renamed to Barclay by Frame's son-in-law, James Barclay, in 1736. With the coming of democratic capitalism, around the time of Adam Smith (1776) there was a massive growth in the banking industry. Within the new system of ownership and investment, moneyholders were able to reduce the State's intervention in economic affairs, remove barriers to competition, and, in general, allow anyone willing to work hard enough-and who also has access to capital-to become a capitalist. It wasn't until over 100 years after Adam Smith, however, that companies began to apply his policies in large scale and shift the financial power from England to America. By the early 1900s New York was beginning to emerge as the world's leading financial center. Companies and individuals acquired large investments in (other) companies in the US and Europe, resulting in the first true market integration. This comparatively high level of market integration proved especially beneficial when World War I came-both sides in the conflict sought funds from the United States, by issuing new securities and selling existing holdings, though the Allied Powers raised by far the larger amounts. Being a lender to the world resulted in the largest growth of a financial economy to that point. Global banking and capital market services proliferated during the 1980s and 1990s as a result of a great increase in demand from companies, governments, and financial institutions, but also because financial market conditions were on the whole, bullish. Nevertheless, in recent years, the dominance of U.S. financial markets has been disappearing and there has been an increasing interest in foreign stocks. The extraordinary growth of foreign financial markets results from both large increases in the pool of savings in foreign countries, such as Japan, and, especially, the deregulation of foreign financial markets, which has enabled them to expand their activities. Thus, corporations and bank have started seeking investment opportunity abroad. Such growing internationalization and opportunity in financial services has entirely changed the competitive landscape, as now many banks have demonstrated a preference for the "universal banking" model so prevalent in Europe. Universal banks are free to engage in all forms of financial services, make investments in client companies, and function as much as possible as a "one-stop" supplier of both retail and wholesale financial services.
